Back when I was a kid growing
up, (more than 60 years ago) one of the first things we did when summer started was to go out in the evenings and catch lightning bugs and save them in Mason jars.
Mama would have a fit when she would see them in the house, 'cause she said it was bad luck. According to mama someone in the house would die....
She would absolutely have a fit 'til they were out of the house.. and being an inquisitive little kid, just to see if her superstitions would come true, I'd hide my jar
under the bed. (Sure did light it up under there.) Nobody ever died while they were in the house, so I'm guessing we were either mighty lucky or else it WAS just an ole wives tale...
It's a wonder she didn't kill me... Good thing mama didn't catch me or I wouldn't be this old now.
Guess some of it rubbed off on me, cause now I don't feel comfortable when one gets in my house.
Funny how things have a way of coming back around.
